Editor’s Note: Normally deaths are treated in the obituary section. However, Mr. Herrick’s untimely death at a young age deserves our reporting and acknowledgement.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. James O. Herrick, Jr., 46, of Osceola Road Extension, Richmond, who died Sept. 12, 2013 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, was held Tuesday at St. Ann’s Church in Lenox.
The service was celebrated by Father C.J. Waitekus, pastor of St. Ann’s Church. Burial followed in St. Ann’s Cemetery.
Mr. Herrick was well known in the Berkshire community and since Dec. 2009, he had served as Vice President of Personal Lines at Berkshire (Bank) Insurance Group, Pittsfield.
He was a volunteer, board member, coach, and referee for the Lenox Youth Basketball Association for many years
Born in Pittsfield, Aug. 17, 1967, the son of James O. and Valerie (Maillow) Herrick of Lenox, Mr. Herrick was a 1986 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Pittsfield and earned a B.A. degree in economics and philosophy from Boston College in 1990.
At the time of his death, Jim was responsible for the overall direction and administration of the programs and services provided by the personal lines division at Berkshire Bank’s insurance division.
According to the Berkshire Bank website: Mr. Herrick began his insurance career in 1990. He joined Berkshire Insurance Group from Hanover Insurance Group, Worcester, where he served as director of strategic initiatives.
While at Hanover, Mr. Herrick also served as the director of servicing carrier operations and as a marketing manager.
Prior to Hanover, Jim served as a marketing manager for Berkshire Mutual Insurance Company in Pittsfield and worked in operations and sales for the Toole Insurance Agency in Lee.
Mr. Herrick was a past Governing Committee member of the New Jersey Commercial Automobile Insurance Plan, the Massachusetts Automobile Insurers Bureau Rules and Forms Committee, and the Massachusetts Commercial Automobile Committee for the Commonwealth Automobile Reinsures (CAR).
Jim served on the board of the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents (MAIA), and the Lenox Youth Basketball Association.
He was a communicant of St. Paul’s Church, Stockbridge, and a member of the Alford Brook Club.
Besides his parents, Mr. Herrick leaves his wife, Elissa (Lisa) Fraser, a son, Benjamin J. and daughter, Mollie M. Herrick, a brother, Timothy J. of Lee and a sister, Elaine M. Luers of Dublin, Ohio. The Roche Funeral Home was in charge of the service.
