Quiet house

As I sit here at my keyboard leisurely drinking my English tea, I realize I’m all alone and the quiet overtakes me a bit. Outside the misty drops fall and sullen clouds gather overhead in congruence with my state of mind.

My girls are gone… okay, only until three, but still the first day of school can just turn us moms and dads into one giant bowl of mush. Emotions are at their peak all over again. We bring out the camera and get those pictures: glamour shots, funny faces, single poses and hugs.

Next off they go onto the big yellow monster, and I’m waving at tinted windows hoping they see me, as it sweeps them into a world beyond my responses, my protection, oh my! It’s a world where callous kids can make for bad days, where sweet friendships blossom and reignite, where teacher-student relationships can be the most influential and where learning enables them to grow and prosper.

And I feel I should tell you I was devastated to see on Facebook there is a new lethal drug out there that looks like pop-rocks and comes in strawberry and chocolate flavor! Educate, Moms!

As far as fashion goes, what was I to do if my daughter didn’t have Osiris sneakers this year? Drama!

We got them and truthfully they look like sneakers on steroids – not the cutest, right up there with Crocs; what are people thinking anyway? Oh yeah, comfort.

Today though I watched her pink fringe boots enthusiastically head off into the dewy morning.

When I got home and strolled back in the door, the silence hit me like a cement wall – all the life had gone from my home, except for my dog who can hardly contain herself, tail wagging like a windshield wiper in the hard rain.

There’s no bounding elephants down the stairs, no canned laughter from the Disney Channel, no giggling and arguing over games or my daughter saying, “Ma-ma, what are we doing today?”

Breakfast bowls sit, along with empty chairs at the table, and you can’t really talk to empty chairs, unless you’re trying to make an intelligent, well-researched point in politics, right? You got to hand it to Clint for that one, love him… unforgettable.

It is peaceful though. (Writer lets out a long sigh.)

Scratch that – my Peter Pan of a Wheaten just started going ballistic at the neighborhood chipmunk and squirrels who love to park themselves on the back railing, twitch their little noses and tease the heck out of her.

Oh, and there goes one of my jewels (a female ruby-throated hummingbird), the perfect way to start the day as my yard is like an airport (I’m giving you a play-by-play). Someone once told me that they like to come to happy homes and carry sweetness.

What will I do when they leave, as the nights are getting chilly and it’s almost time for them to migrate? Everyone always has to leave at some point, right? It’s the way of the world.

But really, moms give a shout out: How do you feel on these bittersweet days? Are you ready for school to begin?

Don’t get that tinge of guilt if suddenly you say to your friend, “I think I’m ready,” they say, “I’m not,” and you’re thinking, “Oh boy, I must be a bad mother or something.” It’s okay to be ready and moms deal with different ages and different dynamics, along with the fact that every child has his/her own unique personality.

This week my girlfriend and I are ready for long overdue massages and wine. After all it’s true: you are doing the most important job in the world being a mother. Our children are the future.

So when the silence comes and we find ourselves alone again, just take comfort in knowing that, then get out there for some healthy rejuvenation of your souls!

-Ciao Bella
