Monument Mountain stays competitive

Members of the Monument Mountain soccer team prepare for the fall season.

GREAT BARRINGTON – After losing last season in the western Massachusetts quarterfinals to Belchertown, Spartans head coach Jess Platt hopes this year they can not only avoid injuries but also continue to develop and get back to the tournament in November.

“We work toward the tournament every year, that’s our goal and we need to give ourselves a chance,” said Platt.

This year she returns five seniors, including captains Hannah Rolf, Courtney Freadman and Emma D’Alessio. Rolf will be called upon to man the mid-field while Freadman will play on the outside in the midfield, while D’Alessio will be anchoring the backline.

In the net, the Spartans will use senior Lolani de’Ris who replaces standout goalie Meg NeJaime, who graduated last year.

“De’Ris is super athletic,” said Platt.

On the front line, Katrina Liptor will be asked to score goals for the offense.

“She is going to be an impact player for us up top,” Platt said. “(Liptor) will have her game this year.”

Platt will use a typical 4-4-2 lineup, and despite losing some key players last year, Platt feels as if her lineup will help her stay competitive in the Berkshire County this season.

“We lost a couple of our big hitters on the backline last year, but we are filling them out,” Platt said.

One of those returning players who will be filling out the midfield is Hayley Korte who brings a ton of athletic talent to the Spartans lineup.

“She is a big hitter, and will play both the midfield and the forward position,” Platt said. “She is a great athlete.”

With only 31 girls trying out for both the varsity and junior varsity teams, Platt will also rely on three freshman and some sophomores to help build up the girl’s soccer program.

“We are really looking forward to our youth programs and next year will be a big hitting year,” Platt said. With 16 seventh-graders and 17 eighth-graders, the Spartans program appears to be on the rise in the upcoming years.

However, for now the pre-season has been about physical fitness and preparation for Sept. 7’s opener against Drury.

“We have had a long pre-season and so we are ready to start on Friday verse Drury,” Platt said. “We are getting our fitness back and making sure everyone has their defensive skills in check. We are trying to get to know each other, and finding each other on the field and trying to find out what everyone’s habits are, and getting to a point where we all click and feel comfortable.”

Platt has integrated some interesting programs at Monument Mountain over the last two years besides working with an area fitness and gymnastics instructor, Platt has implemented programs to help reduce injuries to her players, especially those injuries involving ACL or inner knee injuries.

“It’s easy to do and it doesn’t interfere with practice,” Platt said. “It has a ton of benefits.”
