Pal·la·di·um?

Pal·la·di·um: 1. a statue of Athena, especially one on the citadel of Troy on which the safety of the city was supposed to depend. 2(usually lowercase) anything believed to provide protection or safety; safeguard.

In Lenox, we have a stretch of Palladium lights along Walker Street.

Their numbers and brightness outshine the value of a historic community.

It’s overkill, with two to a property and an installation plan that went awry.

Jeff Vincent admitted he has received complaints and was addressing it first by taking down the existing light pole fixtures and second installing shields on some of the new historic poles.

This installation reminds one of the early days of Lee when Main Street was ablaze with light fixtures that nearly blinded drivers.

Mr. Vincent said that he could cut the number of lights in half. The goal, according to Mr. Vincent, was to shine light across Walker Street.

Where did he ever get this idea?

And, if one looks closely, the new streetlights are not like the fixtures in the central historic district? Wasn’t there suppose to be some uniformity with the replacement of lights?

Even the old historic lamps were designed to shed light on only part of a roadway, not the whole road.

If the Palladium lights remind one of an airport, a stadium or a gathering place, then local officials turned Lenox into a maze of bright lights.

Herein is where the Lenox Historic District Commission should have reviewed the plans, as its authority goes just east of the Trinity Church.

In any event, this new installation lacked any plan to enhance Walker Street.

Lighting can and does have the ability to attract attention and, in keeping with the historic district, should be warm and inviting, not ultra bright or garish, but offer a sense of invitation. Isn’t this what we want for our visitors?
