Fantastic foursomes

For Berkshire County golfers, winter can be a very depressing time.

To avoid cold weather rust affecting our abilities, many of us will toss the clubs into the Thule roof box and gas up the rig and head south, or maybe bag up the weapons and take your chances an airline will have your clubs on the carousel when you disembark your bird.

You can also pre-ship your sticks to avoid schlepping them around the airport and maybe paying extra baggage fees. If this is your choice, shop around. Last winter I shipped my bag to Florida for $64. When I went to the same company to send them home, the price was $165. Long story.

Before all this goes down, maybe your could think of an “Ideal Fantasy Foursome” you could put together of three people, breathing or not, to make up your group. You may also include a first alternate.

The Beacon posed the question to column contributors and area hackers as to whom they would select to fill up a couple of carts on a 72 degree day with no wind. We received some very interesting choices.

Josh Hillman, Taconic golf pro: Donald Ross, Bobby Jones and Jim Salinetti
Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher: Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus (in his prime) and his father (Frank Capuano)
George Montiel, PGA Florida section, formerly of Casa de Campo: Lee Trevino, his father and Warren Buffett; alternate Paula Creamer
Paul Mahoney, area celebrity and shot maker: Vince Lombardi, Joe Piretti and Phil Mickelson; alternate Lewis Black
John Davidson, Stockbridge Golf Club: Arnie, his father and Fred Couples
Lee Phillips, LPGA starter at Stratton Country Club in Vermont, Air Force vet: Both George Bushes and any wounded warrior, male or female
Kim Phillips, brother of Lee: Arnold “Arnie” Palmer, Jack and JFK
Cecil Jaffe, Lake Success Country Club, short game specialist (including off the tee): Tom Watson, Chi Chi Rodriquez and President Obama
Jim Underdown, PGA, Wahconah Country Club: Ben Hogan, Bob Knight and Dale Earnhardt to drive his two sons
Ned Hayes, Greenock Country Club: George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Tom Brady; alternate Big Papi
Dick Degray, Brattleboro selectman, past winner of NA Singles: Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray and George Burns; alternate Tiger Woods
Gary Fairbanks, Tampa, Fla., past winner of NA Singles: Arnie, Donald Ross and Alister Mackenzie
John Courtney, coach of East Longmedow High School golf: Bubba Watson, Phil and Bob Charles; alternate Bill Russell (all lefties like him)
Dick Rivers, Berkshire Senior Series guru, Skyline Country Club: Nelson Mandela, Ted Williams and Lee Trevino; alternate Obama
Jay Nomako, Western Massachusetts Golf director: Donald Trump, Tiger and Johnny Carson; alternate Michael Jordan.
John Barrett III, former mayor of North Adams: Ben Hogan, Tip O’Neil and Trevino; alternate Bobby Jones
Ron Beck, Director of Golf, golfthefox.com: Hogan, Byron Nelson and Bobby Jones; alternate his dad, Dick Beck
Ed Noel, former Drury and McCann coach: Frank Zoltek, Phil, Williams Women’s Golf Coach Erika DeSanty
Luke Salvatore, Cranwell golf instructor: Drew Brees, David Duval and Pete Melle; alt. Hogan
John Wells, PGA member since 1964, no. 1 golf ambassador of Lenox: his father, his uncle and his brother; alternate his cousin
Mike Martin, head hoop coach at Brown University: Bob Knight, Michael Jordan and Obama

Linda Syriac, Beacon photographer: Linda could not make up her mind and was unable to narrow her choices down to thee people. She was torn between friends that she would have fun with, Susan Hayes and Dan O’Brien (the Lenox merchant, not the olympian) and many of her favorite personalities, which included Orlando Cepeda, Mohammad Ali, Coach Knight, Edgar Prado, Tiger and Bill “Spaceman” Lee.

As for your Beacon scribe: Fantasy twosome – a no brainer – would be me and dad, John Syriac; foursome: Bob Hope, Mickey Mantle and Ramon Dominguez, first alternate Phil Mushnick and second alternate Bob Eucker (in case Mushnick doesn’t show)

The choices were interesting for sure, ranging from golfing legends to sports personalities to family members to politicians to someone trying to get a date with Paula Creamer. We thank everyone who replied to our survey.

To all golfers out there in Beaconland , if you are unable to golf with your ideal group (with apologies to Stephen Stills), enjoy the group your with.
