I would be remissed if I didn’t respond to your recent editorial “An ice rink for Lenox.”
While certainly not as large as your tennis court proposal, the Lenox Community Center offers to the public an ice rink. This skating rink has been in existence for the 10-plus years that I have been director, and I am told it is more like 20-plus years.
Ray Kirby, the former maintenance employee, and current [employee] Mike Sullivan, have put in countless hours in order to maintain this rink. Mike Sullivan sprays in sub-freezing temperatures at all hours of the day and night.
Lights are provided in the evening and the back room is open for the public to borrow the many boxes of donated skates from our wonderful community. Restrooms are available!
The community center board and its staff over see this wonderful, quaint treasure in Lenox. While, currently, the rink is met with increased frustration due to the fluctuating temperatures, it is utilized for our vacation week and after-school program. We strive to offer a healthy, safe outlet for our kids.
So I say to you Mr. Jordan, strap on your skates, bring your staff and join us here at the LCC Community Skating rink. We strive to offer services to “young and old alike.”
