Lee and Lenox girls advance to the ‘Cage’ semi-finals

Lee- Once again the Lady Wildcats advanced easily to the Western Mass. semi-finals, as did their cross-town foes, Lenox on Friday night.

Lee dismantled a undersized New Leadership (Springfield)team  at home, 70-24. While the Lady Millionaires, behind Hayden Zinchuk’s 20 points and Liz Mitts’ 18 points easily handled Gateway, 54-20.

Lee and Lenox will now travel to Amherst next week to play in the Western Mass. semi-finals, with the Wildcats taking on Granby on Tuesday at 5pm. While Lenox will battle #1 seed Sabis (22-1) on Wednesday at 5pm, both games will be at the Cage on the UMass campus.

It was an emotional game for the seniors for both teams last night as Lenox’s Kathy Prescott, Jaclyn Gigliotti, Jen Delasco, and Zinchuk said good-bye to their home court. While Lee’s Moriah McKenna, Sara Middleton, Stephanie Young, Eileen Dooley, and Hadley Cook said good-bye to the Lee fans.

“It was sad – this has been our home for the past four years s0 it is kind of sad,” Young said.

Young and Dooley went out with a bang against the New Leadership Wildcats, Young who had 24 of her 28 points at halftime finished the game with 12 rebounds. Dooley was all over the court, smothering the visiting Wildcats offense with her full-court press and added 18 points with 10 assists.

However, the difference maker under the boards was Lee’ freshman reserve Courtney Picard, who gathered 17 rebounds to go along with her 7 points, and helped Lee build a comfortable 37-16 lead at the break.

Tuesday, the game could be a little tougher for the Wildcats as Granby moved to (18-3) on the year with a 49-42 win over Hopkins.

But don’t tell Young that, she has one thing on her mind from last year’s semi-finals loss to Lenox – redemption.

“Redemption – this is our time this year – we are excited to get it started,” Young said.
