All year the Lady Wildcats have relied on their superstars; point guard Eileen Dooley and 1,000 point scorer Stephanie Young to make another run at a Western Mass. title.
Now that the senior stars are in the midst of their ‘redemption’ tournament run, it has been the play of a freshman that has the Cats’ thinking title this Saturday.
Tuesday night Young’s 30 points 16 rebounds, and Dooley’s 20 points, helped Lee redeem themselves from last year’s semi-final loss to Lenox to earn a trip to Saturday’s Western Mass final after their convincing 70-56 win over Granby at the ‘Cage” in Amherst, while freshman Courtney Picard played solid interior defense and chipped in 10 points.
As a team the Wildcats played their best basketball of the season, especially in the second half as they outscored their opponent 26-12 in the third quarter and built a 20-point lead against a solid #3 seed Granby team (18-4), thanks in part to Lee’s newfound third scoring option – Picard.
“Courtney hit some key shots for us and she’s been getting confident down the stretch,” said Lee head coach Gary Wellington.
Lee will now await the winner of Lenox and Sabis on Wednesday evening, with the Western Mass final to be played on Saturday morning at 10:45 in the Cage (Amherst).
