Lady Wildcats have sight on ‘redemption’ final in Amherst

All season long, senior and 1,000-point scorer Stephanie Young has lived by the mantra “This is our year” and has repeated the word “redemption” over and over again.

Following a semi-final loss to Lenox last year at the “Cage” in Amherst, Young and fellow seniors have worked to at least to get to the Western Mass. final this year – and they have.

The Wildcats easily disposed of no. 3 seed Granby (18-4) on Tuesday night in the Cage, 70-56, behind 30 points and 16 rebounds by Young and 20 points and five assists by Eileen Dooley.

“We came in the third quarter and put it together,” said Lee Head Coach Gary Wellington. “The way we finished up [the season] and the way the girls are starting to relax a little bit – we have a little bit left – we will see what we can do.”

What is left for the Wildcats is a 10:45 a.m. start this Saturday morning, against the winner of the no. 1 seed Sabis and no. 4 seed Lenox game, for the Western Mass. Championship and a chance to move on to the state title game in Worcester on March 16.

Against Granby, Lee trailed early on in the first quarter, 14-9 with 1:46 remaining, before going on a 9-0 run to close out the quarter.

Lee held the lead right up to halftime, at 28-25, before going on 26-12 run in the third to break the game open.

The difference in the third was Young, who had 10 points and seven boards at halftime and scored 12 of her 30 points in the third to help carry the ‘Cats to a 54-37 lead.

While Young was the leading scorer, Dooley was instrumental in running the offense and knocking down outside shots.

However, if Lee expects to survive on Saturday, they will continue to need the contributions of their fourth and fifth starters, Hadley Cook (six points) and freshman Courtney Picard (10 points, 14 rebounds).

“[With] Courtney hitting the shots we needed – she is getting more confident as we go,” Wellington said. “To get [Picard] in the game we need her to relax – but she came on the bus and said, Coach – I am ready to play.”

If Picard can provide an added third scoring option to compliment Cook and reserve Megan Gaul, the Wildcats have a shot against no. 1 seed Sabis (22-1) if they advance over Lenox.

“[With Dooley] hitting key shots and taking care of the basketball – Gaul played a great second half – and Moriah McKenna hitting the boards – you always need that third scorer and [Cook] is very smart and can put the ball in the hoop if you give her a shot,” Wellington said.

Either way, win or lose, Lee has reached one of its goals of playing in the Cage for a Western Mass. final – a feeling Young calls “indescribable.”

“The feeling you get when you get into the Cage is indescribable, the intensity picks up so many notches – we were pretty pumped coming out of the locker room,” she said.

The hard work and the ups and downs of the season have passed for Lee, as the six seniors on the team now face one more hill to climb on Saturday morning.

“We worked hard all year to get back here, and we want it to be our time this year,” Young said.
