Bousquet celebrates St. Patrick’s Day

PITTSFIELD – The 2012-2013 winter season went out with a bang as fireworks exploded over Bousquet Ski Area.

A torchlight parade and fireworks display concluded Bousquet’s 14th annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration – a day filled with festivities marking both the traditional Irish holiday and the Pittsfield ski area’s supposed last weekend of the winter season. Bousquet had planned to close for skiing after last weekend but will now be open this weekend due to the snowfall from this week’s winter storm.

“We are considering opening Saturday and Sunday 9-4 if we get a significant snowfall,” Bousquet owner Sherry Roberts said on Monday.

Ms. Roberts planned to make the decision Tuesday afternoon on whether or not to open, based on the snowfall totals.

“If we get closer to eight inches and no rain or freezing rain, I’d say we would be open for the weekend,” she said.

Ms. Roberts then confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Bousquet will be open for skiing this weekend.

“We’ve had numerous phone calls today, and so we did decide to open Saturday and Sunday 9-4,” she explained.

This latest snowfall is an added bonus for what has already been “a great season,” according to Ms. Roberts. It is also a milestone season – Bousquet’s 80th continuous year in operation. Bousquet opened in 1932, making it one of the oldest continuing ski areas in the country.

Therefore, much was celebrated on St. Patty’s weekend, and Bousquet went all out with Irish Olympics, a slush jump, green snow and even some green beer (for those requesting it).

According to Ms. Roberts, Bouquet started hosting the Irish Olympics and slush jump 14 years ago after Brodie Mountain closed. A lot of Brodie’s employees came over to Bousquet and wanted to continue the St. Patrick’s tradition, and it’s been a hit ever since.

“We always have a good turnout with locals and people from out of town,” said Ms. Roberts. “It’s a lot of fun.”

The Irish Olympics events kicked off at 11 a.m. with the cardboard box race – basically sledding in a cardboard box. The winning team, according to Bousquet’s Facebook page, was the aptly themed team Guinness 2.

The events continued with a kids’ cookie race and an obstacle course, though the slush jump was the main event and drew the largest crowd. By 2 p.m., spectators had lined both sides of the “pool,” awaiting the first athlete to make their way down the slope and across the water. Most, of course, ended up in the water.

“Three-quarters of the people don’t make it [all the way across]” said Ms. Roberts.

Overall, the St. Patrick’s celebration at Bousquet is a great local event filled with food, family and fun.

“It’s just a fun family event,” said Ms. Roberts.
