Lee Boosters send off Lady Wildcats with banner slogans

LEE – If you are wondering why banners were used this year instead of the traditional basketballs down Housatonic Street to send off the Lady Wildcats to the state championship, you are not alone.

The brainchild behind the banners with such names as the ones for Megan Gaul – The Secretary of Defense – and Moriah McKenna – Moriah is Money – was none other then Lee Football Gridiron Fundraising Coordinator Billy Loehr.

“[Loehr] got all the [orange] sheets and the spray paint was donated by Dresser Hull Co. [at 60 Railroad St.],” said Lee Booster Co-President Lisa Young. “[Loehr] came up with all the slogans – that was fun.”

While Loehr, Young and other boosters spray-painted the catchy slogans, the wind on the Thursday before the game had other ideas, knocking most of the boosters’ work across town.

“We had them fixed the next day,” Young said.

On Saturday morning, the boosters provided a fan bus, with 30-40 people who traveled to Worcester to watch the Wildcats play their final season game.

For the players and coaches, the boosters provided a coach bus so the team could ride in comfort in preparation.

“It’s something we usually do,” Young said of the bus to the championship game across state.

For star player and 1,400-point career scorer Stephanie Young, the experience was something she will always cherish.

“Our town or coming from a small town, basketball is all that we have – so to have the whole town behind us means so much,” said the senior Western Mass. Player of the Year. “Having my family there and sharing that moment with them has been great.”
