Spring track season looks promising for Millionaires

LENOX – Head Coach Jeanne Teasdale has another promising season in front of her as the track season kicks off April 11 against powerhouse Monument Mountain in Great Barrington.

Building on Western Mass. titles in cross-country in the fall, Teasdale has almost 70 boys and girls coming out for the track team this year despite the snowy conditions.

“We are still conditioning,” Teasdale said. “We actually head to the track the second week but because of the weather – we decided to stay in [Lenox].”

The Millionaires, who will co-op with Lee this year, will be able to head down to Monument next week for a couple of practices on the track in preparation for their meet the following Thursday.

While the team works from home doing drills and conditioning, Teasdale sees great potential in this year’s team, with several key returners on both sides.

For the boys, reigning Berkshire County Champion in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter is Georgetown-bound Scott Carpenter.

Carpenter won a spot in States last year in the 3,200m after winning Western Mass. with a time of 9:36.

“His goal this year is to break nine minutes,” Teasdale said.

Also competing for long-distance spots will be returning sophomore Ben Herrick and newcomer Tucker McNinch – who had a very successful cross-country season. Both will be running the 1,600/3,200m.

“They should dominate some meets,” Teasdale said. “With relays, we will have to strategize to get those extra points and win some meets.”

Eric Lomaglio will return running the 400/800m. Lomaglio’s season was cut short due to an illness last year, but he looks strong to regain his previous form this year.

Jordan Nelson returns as a sprinter for the 100/200m, and Nick Jarck, a transfer from Pittsfield High School, shows a lot of promise in both the long jump and high jump. Evan Yeates returns in the discus/shot put.

“[Jarck] should qualify for Western Mass.,” Teasdale said.

Teasdale’s boys’ team struggled to keep up with both Division 2 Mt. Greylock and Monument Mountain in Berkshire County last year, as Teasdale carried only 20 boys, while this season many new faces have arrived, including McNinch and senior Robby Navarino.

“We have some depth [this year],” Teasdale said. “[Navarino] will do middle distance runs and [McNinch] will make a really nice transition.”

On the girls’ side, Teasdale carries a few over from her cross-country title team to compete in the long distance events, including Western Mass. qualifiers Emily Tibbets and Kate McNinch.

Anchoring the 400m and relays will be Tova Brown, while sprinter Ambr Shove shores up the 100/200m events.

Andie Nugent will compete in the high and long jump events, while Robin Thiel adds some depth and looks really strong in the high jump as well.

At shot put/discus, Teasdale is fortunate to have the athletic Bailey Fielding solidify that position in hopes of earning a few more victories at the end of the day.

“The kids are so excited – they want to get to the track,” Teasdale said. “We have our work cut out for us.”
