Lady Spartan softball strikes back with easy win over Lee

GREAT BARRINGTON – Sarah Mead’s Lady Spartans have been rebuilding a Monument softball program for a couple of years now.

This may be the year she finally reaps the fruit of her labor.

While the Lady Spartans may be a year away from Berkshire County success, this season has already yielded progress, as Monument beat Lee 24-9 on Tuesday to improve to 1-1 overall.

After an opening day loss (8-1) to Drury on Monday, the Spartans erupted for a 12-run first inning and a nine-run third inning before cruising to the fifteen-run rule in the bottom of the fifth.

“I thought we played really well against Drury – I knew we could come out strong – I am very proud of my pitchers,” Mead said.

After Lee’s starting pitcher walked 10 batters and yielded three hits in the first inning, giving the Spartans a 12-3 lead, the ‘Cats battled back in the top of the second to make it a game.

Catcher Nikki Laudon hit a three-run home run to left to make it 12-6.

Sara Middleton followed with a single to center and Sammy Brown added a single coupled with a stolen base to put runners in scoring position.

After a strikeout, Hannah Miller laced a two-run single to center to make it 12-8.

Unfortunately, Lee would never get any closer.

“We battled back and it was 12-8 – I mean the walks here and there – we were aggressive and they were aggressive; it just didn’t go our way,” said Lee Coach Brittany Breault.

Makayla White added a RBI single in the bottom half for Monument, to make it 13-8.

Monument pitcher Aspen Sawyer then came in for relief of White in the top of the third, allowing only one run the rest of the way for the victory, as the Spartans added nine runs in the bottom third on three hits and four walks.

“The first [couple of innings] were a little rough, but we got through it and we just battled and just took off with everything that we were doing,” Mead said.

Taking off is what Monument does best, as leadoff hitter Aanisah Taylor was four-for-five with four infield singles. On all four hits, the former track runner used her blazing speed to reach safely.

“With her speed, we made her into a slapper – if she puts the ball in play, she will be safe,” Mead said.

For the Wildcats, pitching appears to be the main concern for Lee, as they had 16 walks in the first three innings before Laudon came in for relief.

“[Laudon] definitely led our team today – she tried her best out there – she is not used to pitching, she is always a catcher and that’s her number one position,” Breault said. “ I think she showed a lot of leadership skills today.”

The ‘Cats were also led by Stephanie Young and her two hits and a double to right by Vanessa Castillo, proving that scoring runs will not be a problem for this senior-laden group.

“We are dependent on our hitting – usually when you score nine runs, you are not going to lose,” Breault added.

The win for the Spartans gives them hope, as Sawyer progresses in the circle and Monument learns to manufacture runs on the bases by playing small ball.

“I have a lot of young players – but I told them to relax and have fun,” Mead said. “We have good team chemistry, which helps them out at the plate to be confident.”
