More on Gliwski’s golf career

Last week, in part one of our feature on Drury High School graduate and PGA professional Trevor Gliwski, we followed his early years in the golf business and his dedication to improving his game, which resulted in a Mass Am win in 1992 and D-1 scholarship at Coastal Carolina College in Myrtle Beach.

(In part one, we incorrectly reported that Trevor was a 1998 Drury grad when in fact, he graduated in 1990.)

At Coastal, he had four NCAA Division I tournament wins and a Big South Conference Championship. He qualified for the 1990 US Am at Cherry Hills, where he had a 71 for one of his rounds.

To confirm his dedication to golf in his scholastic years, we tracked down his high school coach, George Petropulos.

“I coached golf for 21 years and he was the hardest working kid I had,” the coach said. “Between his freshman and sophomore year, he bought a new sand wedge and in no time at all he wore the Spaulding engraving off the sole plate.

“He was always hitting balls up on Reservoir Road, and I never had a doubt that he would become a great player. His family was very supportive of his golf, and for me, it was nothing but a pleasure to be involved with his development as a player.”

Former North Adams Mayor John Barrett III recalled when Gliwski won the Mass Amateur: “North Adams was so proud of his accomplishment that we had a ‘Trevor Gliwski Day.’ He brought positive attention to his city and his school, and the entire community showed their appreciation.”

After a few years of mini tours in the US and Canada and working at Bear’s Paw Country Club in Naples, Trevor returned to The Berkshires to work a summer at Stockbridge Golf Club.

It was then time to return to and settle in Florida and establish himself in the golf business, and the rest is history.

Gliwski landed at Tiburon, a Greg Norman design where the “Shark Shootout” is held each year. He was the director of instruction for the Rick Smith PGA Golf School for years, and his current title is head instructor of Tour Academy in the shadow of the Ritz Carlton Resort.

Among his students are many celebrities, including former NBA players Kerry Kittles and Alan Henderson and former New York Yankees pitcher Sterling Hitchcock. There have been years where he has given as many as 1,500 lessons.

His golfing talents have allowed him to play in events in Japan, China, Canada and Hawaii. He is well respected as a top instructor by members of the PGA tour and many come to him for a “tune up” or a “tweak session.”

Trevor Gliwski appears to have a dream job. I was very surprised when he told me that he was to soon resign his post at Tiburon. My initial response was “Oh, you are going to get a real job?”

On second thought, I should have said, “Oh, you are going to have a life?”

Gliwski pointed out that he works at a resort and resorts never close.

“I have spent many Christmas holidays on the range, and I have to be available to our guests on weekends also,” he said. “I am fortunate to have my wife, Luann, a stay-at-home mom, to be there for my 11-year-old daughter, Anna, when I’m on call.”

He added, “Anna could be a decent golfer, but currently, her sport of choice happens to be roller hockey.”

He will soon be utilizing his business degree and entering the private sector in the Naples area and is very excited for the opportunity. He wanted to warn  his former golfing buddies in North Adams: “If I get my amateur status back, maybe I’ll be up to play in the NA Singles.”

Gliwski has won events all over the globe, but the title of NA Singles Champion has eluded him. If he comes north for that challenge, I’ll bet he leaves his driver in the trunk of his car once again.
