Lenox track hangs with Div. 2 powerhouse Spartans

LENOX – April 11 was not an ideal day for the Lenox track team, as they battled cold weather and missing players due to spring vacation week.

Despite the elements, the Millionaire girls hung with Division 2 powerhouse Monument Mountain, falling by a score of 87-54.

“I was really happy with the kids’ performances, especially for their first meet for a lot of them,” said Head Coach Jeanne Teasdale. “We are catching up.”

Amber Shove returned from a successful season last year to open with a win in the 100-meter and 200-meter with times of 13.7 in the 100 and 28.3 in the 200.

“We knew [Shove], who did so well last year in the sprint events – we knew we could always count on her,” Teasdale said.

Also running well for the Millionaires is Shannon Meisberger, who won the 110m hurdles and the triple jump at 28’2″.

“[Meisberger] is on fire – she will do four events, the maximum you can do in a meet,” Teasdale said.

Also looking to be a factor for Lenox this season is Tova Brown, who won the 400m at 1:08.1.

“[Brown] is trying different things this year,” Teasdale said. “[Brown] likes the shorter distances, but she’ll try the 800m and is very versatile.”

Emily Tibbetts won the 3,200m with a time of 13:21.2 and Andie Nugent won the high jump at 4’8″, giving the Millionaires good balance throughout all the events.

While the boys struggled to compete against the Spartans, losing 106-39, thanks largely to Monument’s Connor Storti, who won all four events he competed in – all eyes were on long-distance Lenox runner Scott Carpenter.

Carpenter qualified for Western Mass. by winning the 1,600- and 3,200-meter in 4:39.9 and 9:53.7, respectively.

The Georgetown-bound Carpenter won the 1,600-meter by 20 seconds and is just warming up at this point in the season before pushing himself more and more as the it moves on.

“With [Carpenter], he was injured last fall – he is looking at the end of the season and States – he was playing it safe,” Teasdale said. “He goes internally to do what he does, and he has to get into the zone in order to do that.”

Lenox also had a strong performance from Nick Jarck, who finished first in the 400m and second in the triple jump, while Jordan Newton had a good meet by finishing third in the long jump.

“[Jarck] will do well in the middle distances – we count on him for a lot of points,” Teasdale said. “While [Newton] will be a top contender.”

Ben Herrick is making the transition from basketball star to long-distance runner and finished third in the 3,200m with a time of 11:41.

Look for Herrick’s time to improve in the coming meets as he gets into track shape.

“Some of these multi-sport athletes just need a break,” Teasdale said.

Evan Yeates also looked strong finishing second in the shot-put at 37’5″.

“[Yeates] has come a long way since last year,” Teasdale said.
