Signs of the times

Normally, newspapers run profiles on people towns hired or plan to cover their time on the staff or in local government, in their contract.

Flag Day is June 14 – Friday.

According to Wikipedia, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted “the American continental army” after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.

Here, this June 14 at noon, we’ll be saluting Gregory T. Federspiel, our town manager, who is leaving after 10 years in Lenox to help out the citizens of Manchester-by-the-Sea.

What more fitting way to celebrate his commitment to the town and bringing the Lenox Library before the public with support from the taxpayers with the ringing of the Community Bell, which was paid for as part of the rehabilitation of the library’s exterior.

This will be our final salute from The Berkshire Beacon to acknowledge both his personal and professional commitment to the Town of Lenox.

It is also the day that we bid our reporter Bera B. Dunau goodbye as he joins The Oneonta (NY) Star next month.

As a staff reporter, Mr. Dunau has made many friends in The Berkshires and has used his journalistic skills to quote people accurately. He has also provided The Berkshire Beacon with weekly movie reviews.

When I started this newspaper, I knew that Lenox’s local government would have to change some of their ways pertaining to the Open Meeting Law. I also knew in running a small weekly that editorial people would come into an educational lab of learning while writing and laying out the pages that would bring readers to the printed page, along with our website.

As we continue our goal of a printed medium and the creation of a website for news and features along with a business directory, we’ll think of Bera and know he is leaving with the spirit of helping to start a weekly and developing close ties with the staff; and now, it is time for him to move onto a daily publication with our thanks.

However, in his heart, we know there will be a special place for The Berkshire Beacon and our editorial team. We wish him well.
