Wine events mark start of summer

Wine activity in Berkshire County is gearing up for the summer season, when cold weather and snow are not deterrents.

The county thrives on tourism, which creates a padded market for seasonal wine sales, taking into account Tanglewood, Jacob’s Pillow and the numerous theater and museum activities that stimulate extra sales countywide.

What the result is: fully-stocked wine shops, great wine sales, wine seminars, trips and fabulous in-store tastings.

The winner is you, the consumer.

I have compiled a list of events that will take place in Berkshire County during the month of June and an extra to plan ahead for in August.

Kelly’s Package Store (653 Main St., Dalton), (413) 684-0870

Saturday, June 15: “Berkshire Bus Wreck Tour” (limited to 20, cost: $55)
This bus trip throughout the county will focus on wine, craft beer and locally-made food.
The agenda includes a visit to the grand opening of Balderdash Winery, a Big Elm Brewery tour, a Chocolate Springs reception and a Berkshire picnic featuring winning selections from the Berkshire Tasting Panel.

Saturday, June 22: “Summerfest and Block Party,” 2-6 p.m.
Taste dozens of craft brews from western Massachusetts, winning summer wine from the Berkshire Tasting Panel, picnic foods from the gourmet department and a variety of spirits from around the world. This is a free event.

Spirited (444 Pittsfield Rd., Lenox), (413) 448-2886

Saturday, June 15 and 22: Tasting Tables, noon-4 p.m.
The store will have numerous tasting tables set up both days with new wine finds, craft beer, spirits and wonderful foods that accompany all types of beverages. These are also free events.
On June 15, sample the 12-year-old aged exceptional Zaya rum from Trinidad, and Brewery Ommegang from Cooperstown, N.Y., will host a tasting of their wonderful Belgian-style beers.

Saturday, June 29: ”Summer Tent Sale,” noon-4 p.m.
This is my favorite complimentary wine tasting of the year. Jim Nejaime and his talented crew create the perfect environment for a full-fledged wine tasting to start the season off with a bang.
There are cheese tables, food for purchase and a wealth of wines to sample. The vendors pitch-in for this all-out effort to make this afternoon a true wine drinkers delight.
Last year, there were more than 50 wines to sample, all complimentary. I suggest that you bring a designated driver to this once a year “tent event.”

Tanglewood (297 West St., Lenox), (413) 637-1600

Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 15-18: Tanglewood Wine & Food Classic (cost: $105)
This year the Tanglewood Wine and Food Classic will return. The event features the “Grand Tasting” on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 1-4 p.m. Sample more than 150 wines and food from some of the best restaurants in our region.
