Tanglewood Popular Artists Series begins this weekend
LENOX – From Joan Baez to Guster, this year’s performers in the popular artists series at Tanglewood offer something for everyone.
And that is the whole intention of the series, according to Kim Noltemy, chief marking and communications officer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO).
“It brings in a largely different crowd to Tanglewood,” she told The Beacon. “We have a wide range [of artists], and that’s pretty exciting.”
When deciding the lineup for the popular artists series, organizers usually target the baby boomer group, but also “at least a couple of artists to attract younger audiences,” Ms. Noltemy said.
One of the more contemporary shows to come to Tanglewood this summer is the “Last Summer on Earth Tour 2013,” a triple-billing of Guster, Barenaked Ladies and Ben Folds Five.
“The show is good in that it has three groups together,” Ms. Noltemy said. “It’s kind of fun to have a show like that.”
More classic acts, such as Jackson Browne and Steve Miller Band, also highlight the 2013 popular artists series.
“It’s also really fun to see Joan Baez, who performed with us 20 or 30 years ago, coming back,” Ms. Noltemy said.

June 21, 7 p.m.: Melissa Etheridge Live, with special guest Eric Hutchinson
June 22, 8:30 p.m.: Boston Pops: A Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration, featuring Warren Haynes and conductor Keith Lockhart
June 23, 2:30 p.m.: Joan Baez and the Indigo Girls
July 4, 7 p.m.: Jackson Browne, with special guest Sara Watkins (fireworks to follow the concert)
July 23, 7 p.m.: Last Summer on Earth Tour 2013, featuring Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five and Guster
July 29, 7 p.m.: Steve Miller Band
Aug. 19, 7 p.m.: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, with special guest Josh Ritter
Ms. Noltemy also said another artist would be added to the roster for Labor Day weekend in the coming weeks.
