Girl 2 Girl: As we age

Is summer really half over? It seems it just begun.

As we age our bodies begin to wear and what was once thought to be invincible (our super hero image with cape flying) begins to take a new form. In a manner of speaking we somehow loose our virtuous independence, our need for autonomy becomes even more magnified and our priorities may start to change.

A new hero is flying us over that burning building.

When I studied psychology and focused on Erik Erikson and his stages of growth and development from infancy to old age with the last being Integrity Vs Despair, I always felt that somehow in the last stage we are defeated and I was saddened by that.

I  pictured in my mind a sullen wrinkled up man, head down, eyes glazed over contemplating a life lived and wishing for more time to jump, more time to run, more time to play.

I could see his thinking bubble- frolicking in a green meadow or on a baseball diamond under lush trees beaming as he felt young and alive.

The word despair alone is defined as the loss of hope, hopelessness; a dismal meaning and I am so empathetic to those who are forced to leave their homes and for some the only home they ever knew… to surrender themselves into the shelter and care of others.

But you know there is another side, and I am in awe of the wisdom carried with you and a beautiful sense of self after life’s many wonders and adversities.

There is such a beauty in age that glows from the inside and is reflected in the eyes, our mirrors to the soul.

Smiling eyes, for there is no way to describe the joy they can bring when one looks into them; they are luminous.

I remember my NaNa’s and the lovely people who have graced me with their presence during my career as a nurse; you never forget those gifts.

Some of us may be aging ourselves and coming to this stark awareness and some of us may be experiencing it with aging parents.

Oh I know the call…. asking you to come and sometimes when you get there they are confused or crying and all you can do is sit with them, just be present.

That’s the way it was with my grandmother and I’d give anything for her to call today, and yet I do understand the situation and the conflicting thoughts involved.

Yes, it’s quite the wake up call to receive a phone call one day that your Father or Mother, Aunt, Uncle, Grandmother or Grandfather has just experienced a cardiovascular accident, a heart attack, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor or cancer…

They were strong ones, the unbreakable ones, the rocks that kept us holding on. Now what?

It leaves us to the conclusion and the reality that life really can change in a minute, how so fragile it is, and that we really are all part of life’s whirlwind.

Alas, I guess we have to keep spinning, do what we must, keep those smiling eyes, and yes … be there.

Ciao Bella
