Berkshire Mountain Distillery still on the move

SHEFFIELD – Berkshire Mountain Distillery has been looking for a new home in town and after the first deal fell through a new location has been found.

At this year’s town meeting voters approved a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) plan for Berkshire Mountain Distillery to help the company’s proposed move to a larger location on Route 7. That agreement was only for that property and now a special meeting must be called to approve the agreement again for the new property.

The Board of Selectmen is looking to have that meeting on September 23.

The TIF agreement allows for the distillery to pay no property taxes for the first year of the 10-year deal after the new facility is built. Berkshire Mountain Distillery would pay 10 percent of its tax bill in the second year, with subsequent increases annually until reaching 100 percent after year 10.

A special meeting is needed because the town must send all information about the TIF agreement to the state by October 25 to get it processed in time for the distillery to move as scheduled.

Established in 2007, Berkshire Mountain Distillers, Inc. (BMD) has created a line of award-winning artisanal spirits including Greylock Gin, Ethereal Gins, Ragged Mountain Rum, Ice Glen Vodka, Berkshire Bourbon and New England Corn Whiskey, currently available in 19 different states.

Town Appointments

In 2012 the town changed most town appointments to have term limits, but the health inspectors George Oleen and Richard Kirchner were still left without them.

The board is now looking at adding term limits to those positions and will first look for outside input on how long of a term they should serve.

“I would like to hear from the Board of Health that oversees the inspector,” said chairwomen Julie M. Hannum.

The select board is hoping to add the limits at their next meeting and has been discussing a one-year term limit.
