Editorial: Labor Day
On the one hand, summer vacation is coming to a close this weekend for many people.
The weather patterns were all over the place this summer, but many will remember July as a hot, hot month here in the Berkshires.
August has been mostly sunny, but this week there are the expectations of clouds along with some rain showers.
The fun of summer is not over. There are still entertainment venues operating around the county. Then there are the town and county fairs followed by The Big E in September in West Springfield.
For locals, there are the age old plans of one more visit to the ocean and/or lake for the final swim. Then there is the back to school crowd who knows the doors of education are opening this week just before Labor Day or in the next few weeks for preparatory schools and college students.
Yet for those individuals who have made it a habit over the years to attend a local corn roast in Lenox, this one has a celebratory note: Forty Years.
It a husband and wife operation with friends and family bringing food and drink to the affair.
The corn is provided and cooked in its “husks” over an open flame in a fire pit.
There may be a musician or two. Sometimes there is tenderloin of beef served.
It is a grand old party and its flavor has not changed with tractor pull rides for the kids, conversations by adults and the ability to offer words of welcome and encouragement. The years are flying by and with each year, we collectively get older.
Meanwhile, Labor Day by its nature is a day of rest and reflection.
For us at the Berkshire Beacon it is a chance to go forward with our newspaper dream and share in all the joys and achievements that this county provides.
We hope we are all in some respects here to mirror our community on the pages of the Beacon and to provide a tablet for the printed word.
