Book Review: Something Fresh

Something Fresh  –  P.G. Wodehouse

The Random House Group Limited – Arrow Books $21.95

For virtually 100 years there has been no writer in Merrie Olde England to match P. G. Wodehouse – who won his knighthood a month and a half before he died at 93 in 1975. This novel was first published in 1915, though the story could be taking place today, absent the exquisite language of the time.

Lord Emsworth, having tended to the tedious matter of getting his second son engaged to an American heiress (the daughter of Mr. Peters, the world’s best-known living collector of scarabs) is now free to visit his opposite in-law to be, which he does, trying to show an interest in the scarabs he’s shown.

One is dropped into his hand for particular perusal as Mr. Peters is called away. Emsworth’s mind wanders, and finding an odd-looking object in his hand, absently drops it in his pocket. Later he gives it to his secretary – who marvels at tis value – toi put in his own collection of art treasures, appreciating Mr. Peters’ generosity. Peters, on the other hand, is frantic to find it gone, and takes none of his daughter’s common-sense suggestions for getting it back.

Meanwhile the bride to be is lunching with an old flame who swears that it is HE she’s going to marry – as they both look at the newspaper in which her engagement to Emsworth the younger is announced.

Young Emsworth, in the meantime contacts a detective, intent on getting back letters he wrote to a chorus girl he never met. She, on the other hand, hearing of the reward one gets if one returns the scarab, determines to attend the weekend as a ladies’ maid. And so on. Others arrive on the scene and the palace is full of intrigue – Wodehouse style. The scarab disappears, but all ends, of course, as it should.

Wodehouse fans can be found all over the world. It is evident from this book why that is.
