On the entertainment scene, it was Miley Cyrus at the MTV Video Music Awards last month that set the tone with her “twerking” and sticking out her tongue to the beat of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.”
Wikipedia calls twerking a dance move that involves a person, usually a woman, shaking her hips in an up-and-down bouncing motion, causing the dancer to shake, “wobble” and “jiggle.”
According to the Oxford Dictionary Online, to twerk is “to dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.”
Joanna Weiss, who writes for the Boston Globe, raised the question: Good for Girls(?) noting in the column that the last revelation was striking in light of Cyrus’s VMA performance, which was basically a modern-day burlesque — willing, knowing, and not especially shocking, in the context of the VMAs or the long line of de-clothed former Disney stars.
Pop stars will do anything-it seems-for publicity including Janet Jackson’s and Justin Timeberlake debut for the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show in February 2004. Jackson, according to Wikipedia, performed a medley of her singles “All for You” and “Rhythm Nation.”
She then performed alongside Mr. Timberlake, who sang the lyric “gonna have you naked by the end of this song” from his single “Rock Your Body.” He tore open her top, exposing her right breast. After the performance, Jackson apologized, calling it an accident…
As it turns out, Ms. Miley was the whole show and no one knows who else got awards that night.
And so it goes.
