DownStreet Art continues tonight

NORTH ADAMS – Tonight, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) will kick off the fall season of its DownStreet Art festival with 10 new exhibition openings and live performances by fine and performing arts students and local bands.

The festivities start at 5 p.m. at Adams Community Bank Gallery with the opening of “Figuratively Speaking, Abstractly,” a two-person exhibition featuring New York-based artist Bob Anderson and Berkshire-based artist William Clements. Curated by MCLA alumna and artist Kristen Parker, the exhibit displays visual concepts associated with expression and emotion through the use of non-representational styles.

“I started to look at abstract art and artists in a new light,” Ms. Parker said. “I felt a personal need to re-explore ideas connected with abstract art.”

At 6:30 p.m., there will be a recognition ceremony at the columns of the underpass of Route 2 for students who participated in “Art About Town,” an exhibit (on-site at the columns) of doll paintings created through a community collaborative between North Adams schools, a local artist and MCLA students.

Other openings include “The Afterlife: Interpretations of the Hereafter” at the Jarvis Rockwell Gallery, “Die Formmeister: The Masters of the Form” at MCLA Gallery 51, “Dualities: The Painting of Ed Carson and Ceramics of Joshua Primmer” at NAACO Gallery and “Getting There Is Easy” at PRESS Gallery.

The openings and musical performances will take place from 6-9 p.m. tonight in North Adams. At 7 p.m., the MCLA fine and performing arts department will perform selections from Cabaret at the Berkshire Bank Stage.
