GREAT BARRINGTON – Monument Mountain Regional High School (MMRHS) students will now be able to add lacrosse to their extracurriculars.
The Berkshire Hills Regional School District (BHRSD) School Committee approved the addition of a lacrosse team next spring at a recent meeting.
The district will not have to scramble to find money for lacrosse, as a booster club has been formed to raise funds for start-up and first-year costs.
Berkshire District Attorney David F. Capeless, a parent and member of the booster club, led the charge for the formation of the team.
“The booster club would be happy to absorb the extra costs,” D.A. Capeless said.
The total costs for the team come in at $18,512, and after user fees, the number the booster club needs to raise is around $16,000. About $10,000 of that is attributed to start-up costs, and the district would be expected to contribute at least part of the remaining $8,000 in future years.
21st Century Grant application
The district has applied for a $275,000 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) grant from the state to fund after-school programming for Muddy Brook Regional Elementary and Monument Valley Regional Middle schools in partnership with various Berkshire County arts institutions, including Multicultural Bridge in Housatonic.
“I’m really optimistic about it,” Superintendent Peter J. Dillon said.
According to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) website, 21st CCLC grants are awarded on a competitive basis for three to five years.
“The purpose of the program is to establish or expand community learning centers that operate during out-of-school hours and provide students with academic enrichment opportunities along with other activities designed to complement the students’ regular academic program. Community learning centers may also offer literacy and related educational development to these students’ families,” the website states.
MMRHS renovation plans move forward
BHRSD has submitted the MMHRS renovation plans to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). The MSBA will review and likely approve the plans at its Oct. 17 or 31 meeting.
