New bridge to be up by Dec. 15

LEE – The Meadow Street Bridge has been closed since March but now a true deadline for its replacement has been set.

LB Corporation was the low bidder to install the temporary bridge over Powder Mill Brook, with the project being expected to cost under $105,000.

The temporary bridge was provided by the state, with the Town of Lee picking up the cost to install the bridge.

The completion date for the temporary bridge is Dec.15, meaning the bridge should be open by that day.

Once the temporary bridge is in, the whole focus of the town can move to developing the plan for a permanent replacement.

The design firm Gill has already been chosen to design the permanent bridge and have been given a strict time schedule to get the design done.

But even with that tight time frame members of the select board did raise concerns over when the state would grant them approval to place the permanent bridge. DPW Superintendent Christopher A. Pompi agreed that these projects can take a long time.

“I designed a temporary bridge in 1986 and it is still there,” Mr. Pompi said.

New police cruiser

The funding was approved for a new police interceptor at the last Town Meeting, and now a bid has been chosen to purchase the vehicle.

The bid was won by Stoneham Motor Company, Inc. for just under $35,000. Stoneham is the same company used by many Massachusetts towns to purchase police vehicles.

The new vehicle will be all-wheel drive and more fuel efficient that the current cruisers.
