Zombies hit Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD – Last weekend, Pittsfield felt a little apocalyptic, thanks to the presence of zombies staggering down North Street.

Starting with the “Visual Dead” art show, a screening of Shaun of the Dead and the third annual Zombie Pub Crawl, Zombify Pittsfield drew the undead out in the open on Friday night.

“Our organization started out around four years ago, and in 2010 we got the idea to have a zombie pub crawl,” said Palmer Dietrich, co-director of communications for the Zombie Action Committee, which put together Zombify Pittsfield.

This year’s pub crawl, where the living and undead alike could belly up to the bar and order themed drinks such as a “Brain Hemorrhage,” featured 10 downtown Pittsfield locations, including Spice Dragon and Baba Louie’s.

“Following our first pub crawl, we ended up becoming connected through the web with literally hundreds of other zombie interest groups all over the world, and the idea of expanding the effort to take part of this really worldwide charitable effort just seemed like a great thing to do here,” Mr. Dietrich said.

Following Friday night’s festivities, Saturday afternoon there was a screening of Corpse Bride at The Beacon Cinema, and that night the “epic climax” of Zombify Pittsfield, a “Zombie Prom” at Spice Dragon. People who made canned food donations (for the Christian Center on Robbins Avenue) received free popcorn at the Beacon and discounted admission to the prom.

“Our local food pantries can really use all the help they can get this time of year,” Mr. Dietrich added.
