Singleton presents goals to school committee

SHEFFIELD – Outgoing Southern Berkshire Regional School District (SBRSD) Superintendent Michael J. Singleton is trying to ensure his last year is a productive one.

At a recent meeting of the SBRSD School Committee, Dr. Singleton presented his yearly goals, which include working with the superintendent search committee and the new superintendent to allow for a smooth transition.

His other goals include visiting each classroom in the district once (and new teachers’ classes twice), working with the Elementary Task Force, reviewing the district’s mission statement (with staff assistance) and supervising the groundwork for the new teacher evaluation system through presentations, meetings and training sessions.

Softball improvements

School Committee Member H. Dennis Sears presented information about improvements to Mount Everett’s softball fields.

“[These] improvements could allow us to host NEASC [New England Association of Schools and Colleges] tournaments,” he said.

The proposed renovations include adding an announcer’s booth.

“Construction students would actually do the work,” Mr. Sears said, adding the lumber, dirt and sod for the improvements was also being donated.

“The entire project is without cost to the district,” School Committee Member Carl Stewart.

Task force update

Elementary Task Force Chair Louise Yohalem gave a brief presentation to the school committee on the subcommittee’s work. The group has come up with broad-based ideas for improving the district’s elementary-level program, and is starting to narrow them down with help from the public.

“The success of the plan revolves around having public input,” she said.

The task force has been gathering that input through a series of public forums. Ms. Yohalem said the group would report back to the school committee soon with a more detailed plan. The deadline for the group’s final report is Dec. 1.
