Enjoy the seasons

Every season brings good things, enhancing our lives here on planet earth.

It’s hard to pick a favorite because all of them have so much to offer. Just being alive to savor them is a good thing, right?

Where would one start to pick a favorite season?

When I was a kid, one of my favorite Saturday morning TV shows was Howdy Doody. He was actually a freckle-faced (48 of them, to be exact, and named after the number of states at that time) puppet who sat on the lap of his ventriloquist friend, big Buffalo Bob Smith.

Also on the show was Princess Summerfall Winterspring, so the seasons described here will go in that order.

Summer brings wonderful farmers’ markets filled to the brim with fresh produce.  We all enjoy so much delicious abundance.

There are concerts to attend including those under the stars on the lawns at Tanglewood.

Sandals, swimming in the ocean, eating grilled hamburgers at the picnic table in the backyard, sitting by the fountain hubs installed and enjoying a profusion of colorful, flowering plants are all part of summer’s bounty.

Fall – glorious fall – we are now kissing goodbye. This delightful season is filled with magnificently-attired leaves, azure skies, “marshmallowy” clouds, crisp apples, hayrides and pumpkin everything. (We’ll be drinking pumpkin coffee for quite awhile since our daughter gifted us with a big bag of it.)

Winter’s highlight, for me, anyway, is Christmas. Its magic shines as brightly as the star on the festooned tree in the living room.

After the frenzy of entertaining, buying, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking and enjoying, quiet January arrives. The best part of blinding snowstorms, complete with sleet and howling winds, is snuggling in front of a roaring fire in our living room’s wood-burning fireplace. Nothing can replace such warm and toasty comfort.

At last, signs of spring melt our hearts like the mounds of snow lining sidewalks and roadways. We rush out to buy flowering plants and watch for signs of perky daffodils, tulips and petunias.

We frantically look for our warmer weather clothes and stuff our boots and heavy winter coats into the back of the closet. Exchanging clunky shoes for the freedom of sandals is one of spring’s delights.

Open windows (even a crack), pedicures with fire engine red polish, the cheerful sounds of returning birds, twinkling stars in the heavens and sweet, warm air are all part of beloved spring.

So there we have it – the seasons that are ours for the taking and enjoying.

Are they so different from the seasons of our lives?
