Safety items for homeowners

In an effort to help save lives, the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) has partnered with Energizer’s “Change Your Clock Change Your Battery” program to urge residents to remember to change their smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries when the time changes.

A home without a working smoke detector can be hazardous, even fatal – 38 percent of all fatal fire injuries occur in homes without a working smoke detector. With many people using various forms of heaters, a working carbon monoxide detector is especially important.

Safety tips for homes without power:

  • Use flashlights or flameless candles rather than candles to light your home during power outages.
  • For homes with generators, it is imperative that they have working carbon monoxide detectors. This is a good reminder to change their batteries!
  • Space heaters need space. Portable space heaters need a three-foot (one meter) clearance from anything that can burn and should always be turned off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Never use your oven to heat your home.
