Lenox girls win Western Mass. soccer title

Matt Cote’s team battled through injuries this season including one to their leading scorer, Jen Delasco, but somehow managed to beat both powerhouse Granby (1-0) and Gateway (2-0) in the finals, to win the Western Massachusetts title.

“[In] the beginning of the season I didn’t know [what to expect] – I think this is sort of a Cinderella story,” Cote said.

With eighth grader Tova Brown and freshman Allesandra Arace leading the attack on offense, and with Delasco out for the tournament, the Millionaires were able to surprise many with their success.

“Going into the season and the pre-season – no one was sure – my captains weren’t sure, and the parents and coaches weren’t sure,” Cote said.

Lenox did finish the season with an 11-4-2 record and the no. 1 seed in the tournament despite losing to undefeated Granby during the year.

Against Gateway, Josie Marshall finished off a corner from Arace at the 15-minute mark for the early 1-0 lead. Arace herself netted the final goal late in the second half, with a soft touch just in front of the goal to finish off the Gators, 2-0.

The Millionaires will travel back to Westfield State for the central/western Massachusetts finals at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
