AMHERST – The Ephs had some setbacks at the beginning of the season, forcing Head Coach Aaron Kelton to deal with injuries, as well as a quarterback controversy, after the team’s 30-13 loss to Middlebury.
Yet Kelton steered the ship home – winning three of the last four games despite a setback at Amherst last Saturday.
“I am really pleased with how we played down the stretch with our slow first half start,” Kelton said in a phone interview on Tuesday. “It’s difficult because we never played with the same starting lineup anytime during the season – we were always trying to make adjustments.”
With running back Alex Scyocurka and offensive lineman Cong Tian out early on with injuries and starting quarterback Adam Marske struggling with his decision-making, Kelton made the tough decision to go with strong-armed backup QB Tom Murphy.
Murphy guided the Ephs to three consecutive wins before the Amherst game, where his team led 20-10 after three quarters before being replaced due to injury.
Amherst went on to score 13 unanswered points for the win, 23-20, causing the Ephs to finish a disappointed 4-4 overall.
“Anytime we lose that [Amherst] game it’s disappointing for our program – we didn’t do a great job of closing that game out,” Kelton said.
