Carpenter wins state title, Lenox CC teams finish strong

NORTHFIELD – The state finals shed more light on a Lenox cross-country program which has prospered the past two seasons.

Both the boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams wrapped up another successful season under Coach Jeanne Teasdale, with senior Scott Carpenter winning the overall Division 2 state title.

Carpenter finished first with a time of 15:55.75, giving him the sweep of the Brown Invitational, Western Massaschusetts and state titles.

“Scott has met every one of his goals with his training from week to week,” Teasdale said. “What a way to go out.”

Yet the senior star is not finished – Carpenter, with his three titles, has earned a spot to compete next weekend in regionals in New York City.

Carpenter finished in the top 30 last year in the regional race as a junior, yet has a chance this year to earn a spot in the national race if he can reach his final goal of a top-10 finish.

The Lenox girls’ team finished in the middle of the pack on Saturday, as predicted, despite missing an injured Hannah McCluskey. The 15th place finish as a team earned more praise from their coach on their uncanny ability to stay together in every race.

“They finished so tight – that has helped us all season long,” Teasdale said.
