DALTON – Following the election earlier this month, the new Central Berkshire Regional School District (CBRSD) School Committee met for the first time.
Katherine Caffrey of Dalton, the committee’s sole new member, was sworn in alongside re-elected members Michael F. Case, John F. Conner, Richard M. Farley, Richard E. Lacatell, John J. Les, Gary C. Stergis and Richard J. Wagner.
Reprising their roles, both Shawn A. Armacost and Mr. Case were reapproved by the committee as chair and vice chair, respectively. Their positions were uncontested by other members of the school committee.
“Thank you all,” Mr. Case said.
“Thanks for your vote of confidence,” Mr. Armacost added. “It’s been a tremendous learning experience. I look forward to another year.”

At the school committee’s previous meeting, a vote was taken to offer Joseph M. Scanlon of the Quaboag Regional School District in Warren, Mass., the job of business administrator for the district. Mr. Scanlon declined the offer, as he took another job.
Business administrator update
CBRSD Superintendent William J. Cameron encouraged the committee to take quick action on the position, as current Business Administrator Margaret K. Foster’s retirement is effective as of Jan. 1, 2013.
“We do need to take action…especially going into the budget planning in January,” he said.
The committee did take action, appointing the superintendent to contact another finalist for the position, Pittsfield Public Schools Assistant Business Manager Melissa A. Falkowski, to see if she’s still interested in the job.

Dr. Cameron also awarded Wahconah Regional High School senior Alexandra “Alex” Keaton with the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents’ Award of Excellence.
“[The award is] a public recognition of extraordinary student achievement,” Dr. Cameron said before listing Miss Keaton’s many extra-curricular activities, including National Honor Society (NHS), student council, soccer, lacrosse and the “Pay It Forward by Giving Back” drive.
“Although I participate in many activities, I follow them through until the end,” Miss Keaton said.
