Williams International Studies events announced

WILLIAMSTOWN — The International Studies Colloquium at Williams College begins Sept. 11 with a discussion of “Global Perspectives on 9/11” with Annie Reinhart, associate professor of history, Janneke van de Stadt, associate professor of Russian, Anand Swamy, professor of economics, and Michael MacDonald, Frederick L. Schuman professor of international relations.

The discussion will take place at 2:45 p.m. in Hopkins Hall, room 002. This colloquium is the first in a series of discussions hosted by the International Studies Program throughout the fall semester.

All discussions will begin at 2:45 p.m. in Hopkins Hall, room 002; these events are all free and open to the public.

On Sept. 18, Williams College students Gabor Gurbacs, Jared Hallet, Veronique Hob-Hob and Refiloe Damane will present “Crossing Borders. The Challenges of Migration.”

Michelle Hartman, associate professor at the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University, will present “Arab Women Writers in the World Market: the Politics and Ethics of Translation” on Sept. 25.

On Oct. 2, Woodrow Wilson Professor of Political Science Jim Mahon, Fulbright Scholar in Astronomy Marcos A. Penaloza-Murillo and student Ariana Gonzalez will present “The Elections in Venezuela.”

On Oct. 16, the Center for Development Economics will present “CDE Country Talks: Presidential Transitions in Southern Africa” with Precious Chimbamba (Malawi), Edson Manguinhane (Mozambique) and Philton Makena (Zimbabwe).

Llera Searle, visiting assistant professor of anthropology, will present “Foreign Investment as a Cultural Process: The Case of Indian Real Estate” on Oct. 23.

On Oct. 30, the CDE’s Hayk Ayvazyan (Armenia), Fuad Mammadov (Azerbaijan), Nikoloz Gagua (Georgia) and Giorgi Mamatelashvili (Georgia) will present “CDE Country Talks: 2013, Presidential Elections Across the Caucasus.”

Jackson Professor of Religion Bill Darrow will present “The U.S. Elections from a Global Perspective” on Nov. 6. Students Abdullah Awad and Philip Parnell will present “How Effective are NGOs?” on Nov. 13.

On Nov. 27, Steven Nafziger, associate professor of economics, will discuss “Historical Perspectives on Long-Run Economic Development.”

Nancy Birdsall, visiting professor of economics, will present the final international studies colloquium of the fall semester on Dec. 4.
