Community center repairs postponed

LENOX – The second time may be the charm for efforts to find a contractor to replace the community center’s front door.

Recently, the Town of Lenox put a contract out to bid to replace the Lenox Community Center’s front door, along with related repairs. The town estimated the work would cost around $30,000. The two bids that the town received, however, were significantly above this, coming in just under $40,000 and around $36,000.

This result was not to the liking of the Lenox Board of Selectmen. Additionally, one of the bids may have been dropped off slightly late, which could add a legal complication to considering it.

Because of this, the selectmen decided to table considering the bids at its Nov. 28 meeting.

“I think we’d like to table this for now, and step back and look at it a little better,” said Selectman Edward P. Lane, who serves as the liaison between the selectmen and the community center.

The prospect of re-bidding the project also appears to be very much on the table

“[It] probably will go out to re-bid, but I don’t want to say for sure,” said Selectman Lane, in response to a question from The Beacon.
