Medium on First Street

PITTSFIELD – In an old Victorian house in the center of the city enveloped in rich blue curtains and laden with red poppies, white candles, cleansing crystals, burning incense, fragrant salts, and picturesque cards that go back as far as 12th century Europe sits an enchanting woman.

Her name is Elizabeth “Liz” Stevens and she has been given a gift. Not just the gift to see visions of the future, of perceiving someone by touch or knowing a true person by looking deep within ones eyes… but the gift and the calling to help troubled souls in need of emotional and spiritual guidance.

Above and beyond is what she does best in her journey to care.

As you approach her home you enter through a striking red door embellished in gold as she leads you to your next right – her reading room.

The second you enter there’s a sense of tranquility. The antique fireplace on the wall is a lovely remnant of another era. The draped tables to the right and left are dotted with energy crystals (including one giant pink one the size of a crystal ball) and there in front of bay windows where a hint of sun light washes over the walls Elizabeth sits, behind a large table of deep blue velvet with two white chairs.

This is where she does her magic. A kind of magic that she first really recognized at just seven years old when a spontaneous warning took a young woman out of harm’s way and into safety.

Ms. Stevens tells the story: “My mom would always have these yard sales. And one day a young woman in her early 20s all beautifully made up came up to me to pay for some items, and as she touched my hand I suddenly said, ‘You are going somewhere tonight, don’t go, don’t go! Do not go on the date.’ I didn’t even know what a date was at age 7.”

The next morning the young woman and her mother showed up at her door with flowers for seven-year-old Elizabeth.

As it happened, the young woman went on the date, was in the car with this man and “started paying attention.” She told the man she needed to use the ladies room.

As she got out of the car she went to the outside pay phone to call her mother and turned around only to find the man driving away.

“That will always be a part of my life,” said Ms. Stevens. “We will never know, never know what would have happened had she stayed in the car.”

Throughout her life Ms. Stevens has been using this magic, this gift for the greater good of helping people, and she is a practicing Christian.

The tools she uses in conjunction with her own abilities of insight are tarot cards, crystals and cleansing salts. Her readings are done by touch, voice and looking into eyes.

As Ms. Stevens said, “When you look into someone’s eyes you are reaching into that soul and spirit.”

She continued to speak passionately about her craft: “I do believe in the power of the cards, they have been around for many years. Some people come here for a sense of direction and sometimes proof of an answer.”

She added, “The choice needs to be made from the heart and the mind, and then trust the cards will guide you.”

She also made a point not to do it just because it’s a trend, but to have a sense of what it is you’re asking or searching for.

“You might find more than you expected because the cards will always reveal the truth,” Ms. Stevens said.

As a writer I went in for a story; never having been to a psychic, I was curious, but came out with much more. Today, if you wish to see Ms. Stevens (at 163 First St. in Pittsfield), I assure you, although her time comes with a small fee, it truly is priceless.
