Sen. Downing gets married

State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) has entered into one of the most exciting and intimidating institutions of all: marriage.

Senator for the Berkshire, Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden District, he married Micaelah B. Morrill in a ceremony on Dec. 30 attended by family and friends in Portland, Maine.

Sen. Downing, 31, is a Pittsfield native and the son of Pamela Downing and the late Gerard Downing, who served as the Berkshire County district attorney for 13 years. Mr. Downing passed away in 2003.

A 2003 graduate of Providence College, Sen. Downing received an master’s degree from Tufts University’s Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning in 2008.

Formerly a senior advisor to Congressman John W. Olver (D-Amherst), Sen. Downing was elected to the Berkshire, Hampshire and Franklin District in 2006.

Now the Berkshire, Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden District, it is the largest senate district in Massachusetts. It consists of all of Berkshire County, as well as parts of Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden counties, and contains 52 communities.

He is the Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy. He is currently exploring whether or not to run for the United States Senate seat of John Kerry (D-Mass.), who will resign his office if his nomination to be United States Secretary of State is confirmed.

Ms. Morrill, 30, is the daughter of Jim and Jill Morrill, of Urbandale, Iowa. A 2004 graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, she is finishing up her master’s degree at Tufts University. She lives in Cambridge, Mass., and is the chief of staff of State Sen. Daniel A. Wolf (D-Harwich).
