BSC starts fall season

PITTSFIELD – Barrington Stage Company’s fall season includes a returning favorite, music performances and an adaptation of a literary classic.

“All four events are highlights for me,” said Julianne Boyd, BSC’s artistic director.

The season kicks off on Wednesday, Sept. 19 with the return of Dr. Ruth All the Way, a one-woman comedy starring Debra Jo Rupp (That ’70s Show) as Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the legendary sex therapist. The show had its first run at BSC this summer.

Dr. Ruth All the Way, which runs through Oct. 7 at the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center (36 Linden St.), is directed by Ms. Boyd and written by Mark St. Germain.

Nigel Williams’ adapation of Lord of the Flies hits the BSC Mainstage (30 Union St.) from Oct. 3-21. BSC will be offering discounted student matinees of the show, as the novel is required reading in a lot of classrooms.

Lord of the Flies is particularly exciting because it’s a book everyone has read,” Ms. Boyd said.

Live music this season

BSC is also presenting “Brel in The Berkshires” at the second floor cabaret at Spice Dragon (297 North St.) on Sept. 20, 21 and 23. Amanda McBroom and her husband, George Ball, will be performing the music of singer-songwriter Jacques Brel.

Ms. McBroom and Mr. Ball will also be performing at the Sept. 22 concert fundraiser for BSC’s Playwright Mentoring Project (PMP), also at Spice Dragon’s second floor cabaret.

Starting in October, at-risk kids ages 13-19 from Pittsfield and North Adams will have the opportunity to get involved with PMP, which provides after-school theatre workshops for two hours every week.

“It becomes the community most of them don’t have,” Ms. Boyd said. “It gives them a platform in which to tell other people their stories.”

The program culminates in April with a performance by the students at BSC.

From Oct. 11-13, Joe Iconis and Family will also have a weekend of live performances at the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center.
