Yes!

“Here comes the sun (do-do-do-do), here comes the sun and I say, It’s all right…”

Whenever the sun is shining I’m always reminded of the good times, cheerful spirits and, with its warmth and radiant glow, hope for tomorrow.

While out celebrating with my family and friends, something blossomed right before our eyes. As I turned around, there he was kneeling before her;  she put her hand to her brow, eyes wide like saucers, her mouth dropped open and then came the tears as she nodded her head, “Yes!”

“Yes” I will share my life with you, and “yes” we will grow old together, and “yes” we will have a family and live happily ever after, but the true point is… we will live!

It was the sweetest moment to witness, and I felt fortunate in doing so. We all did as everyone oohed and ahed and the newly-engaged couple illuminated like the sun.

I’m sure many of you have wonderful engagement stories where he surprised you into euphoric exaltation and content.

Did he propose to you on the top of a mountain, in a field of flowers, while fine dining at a five-star restaurant, on a sun setting beach, under the stars, at a Red Sox game, a concert or in the city? You might’ve just been sleepy-eyed at your parents’ as he came in, knelt down and suddenly, your world got even better than you already thought it was.

Or maybe the proposal was not so romantic in your eyes, but perhaps the man you won was better than any fancy proposal because he loves you with all of his heart and what you have is real.

No matter what the proposal is, be it simple or extravagant, it will always be remembered and worth telling.

With Valentine’s Day upon us, I wonder how many of you will receive diamonds. I’ll tell you as soon as you say “yes,” life as you know it will begin to change (just as it did when you realized you loved him) and so will you.

Eleven years later, you look back and realize just how much you have been through together, all the happiness, all the pain, but all along it was the love that sustained you.

You’ve made a family, you’ve planted trees together and watched them grow, you’ve watched the seasons pass each year, maybe you’ve built or bought a house together and forged a common dream.

Marriage can be such a blessing, but with divorce rates where they are, I think we must remember that it won’t always be perfect, he’s not always going to entertain and vice versa. You will fight and there may be times when you get bored, or you want out, along with moments of pure renewal and celebration.

The most important thing that Cinderella (“Someday my prince will come”) doesn’t teach us is marriage is work and sometimes every day, but if you “whistle while you work” and realize the beauty in it, you will be finely rewarded and  come to know that “yes” was the greatest word you ever said.

Ciao Bella
