Rival Amherst men get the best of Eph’s on Sunday

Williams College men’s hoops’ dreams of a NESCAC crown faded quickly in the second half, as rival Amherst (21-2, 9-0) went on a 10-0 run to build a 19-point second-half lead with nine minutes remaining before cruising to 65-48.

The loss drops the Ephs to 20-3 overall and 8-1 in league play and gives Amherst the upper hand for the league’s best overall record and a chance to host the NESCAC tournament, if the Jeffs can beat Middlebury on Tuesday.

The Ephs, who said goodbye to seniors Nate Robertson, Parker McClelland, James Klemm and Sean Hoffman on Senior Day in front of a packed house of 1,178 at Chandler Gymnasium, will still have a shot of being part of a three-way tie for the league’s best if Middlebury knocks off the Jeffs, and Williams can hold court against Trinity on Tuesday.

Against Amherst, the Ephs shot poorly, with an abysmal 30 percent from the field (14/46), while Amherst shot 42 percent (8/19) from behind the arc.

The Ephs were led by Michael Mayer’s 17 points and 10 boards, while Robertson added 13 in what was the Eph’s lowest scoring total of the season. Amherst was lead by Allen Williamson’s 16 points.
