Darey sworn in for 35th time on Fisheries and Wildlife Board

PITTSFIELD – George L. “Gige” Darey of Stockbridge, former Lenox chairman of the board of selectmen, was sworn in Tuesday as a member of the Fisheries and Wildlife Board.

This is the 35th time he was sworn in as a member of the state agency. He has served since 1978 and has been chairman since 1981.

A former teacher in Dalton, he was a Lenox selectman for many years.

Mr. Darey was first appointed in 1978 by Governor Michael S. Dukakis and by five subsequent  Republican governors: Edward J. King, William F. Weld, Argeo Paul Cellucci, Jane M. Swift and Willard “Mitt” Romney.
He said he was appointed by six governors (three Republicans and three Democrats). Both Gov. Dukakis and Gov. Deval L. Patrick have appointed him twice.
Each year, there are dozens of public hearings throughout the commonwealth, and Mr. Darey has never missed one in 34 years.
Representing the Western Wildlife District, Mr. Darey has been an environmental advocate for The Berkshires since returning from military service. He served on the Lenox Conservation Commission as well as the Board of the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions.
He graduated from the State University of New York (Plattsburg) and the University of Massachusetts with a master’s degree.
