“When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza-pie that’s amore!”

This evening, while looking out my second floor window, a tiny piece of its fire-colored light appeared amidst a barely darkened sky, like a game of peek-a-boo behind the jagged tree tops.

And as I stood there I had never seen anything like it before; it was like watching a movie in slow motion. It ever so quietly began to rise, growing bigger and bigger amongst smudges of clouds until it was giant and full and bright and talking.

It seems when the moon is full it always has something to say, something to remind us of, something to alert us of, perhaps even something to foreshadow.

Just as the sun casts its warm, healing light, I think the moon forces us to reach inward and seek out our innermost, deepest and sometimes darkest desires. It can pose questions about life and what we really want out of it, and it’s the perfect stage setting for lovers as, “The moon brings the woman to the man!” I love that quote from Moonstruck.

How do you feel about the phases of the moon? Have you noticed significant changes occur especially when it’s full?

If the moon can affect the vast ocean’s tide, then it most certainly can effect our emotions. Can it not? Let’s explore.

According to National Geographic, there is little scientific evidence of said “lunar effects,” and yet, regardless of what numerous studies conclude, the power of the moon is often used to explain a wide range of events, from human insanity, violent crimes and traffic accidents to putting people in celebratory, sensual and romantic moods conducive to dancing.

Eric Chudler, a psychologist at the University of Washington in Seattle, has a theory and stated people have “selective memories,” and when something unusual happens and there is a full moon, people might notice and assign blame.

Psychiatrist Glen Wilson said, “There is good reason to believe that people’s personalities do change around the time of the full moon, not because of any astronomical force, but because it creates the optimum lighting conditions for feeling carefree and mischievous.”

While these theories may seem plausible, it doesn’t discount the fact that “stuff happens,” and also keep in mind that scientists can “theory away” anything right up to religious beliefs in God and the afterlife.

Looking at history, the belief the full moon causes mental disorders and strange behavior named “The Transylvania Effect” was widespread throughout Europe in the middle ages. Werewolves, witches and vampires! And it’s interesting that the word “lunacy,” meaning “insanity,” comes from the Latin word for moon.

Astrologically speaking, our path the stars guide us on is strongly influenced by the moon’s phases, and the moon’s position when one is born can shed light on the internal landscape of a person and explain why people with two sun signs can be so different.
