Composting coming to Lenox

LENOX – Looking to make your own compost?

The Lenox Environmental Committee has decided to launch a program to offer subsidized composting containers to town residents.

Committee members approved purchasing the containers through at state contract for $40 apiece and selling them for $20.

The difference in the town’s purchase price and what they will be sold for is subsidized by funds from the committee.

The committee hopes residents will have a chance to see the containers in person at the indoor farmers’ market hosted by the Lenox Library on March 23.

Residents will able to purchase the compost containers through the town’s Department of Public Works office. In this first order, the committee plans to offer 20 of the containers to the public, but they pointed out more could be ordered if they sell.

“We have the funds to purchase more, and with the quick delivery, we can have to to provide fast if these all sell,” said Selectman Channing Gibson.

Lenox will be joining the Town of Lee, which is also offering the program.

For those looking for more information about home composting, the Center for Ecotechnology will be hosting a a class at the Lee Library with a hands-on workshop where you can learn the basics and techniques of home composting.

Bus endorsement

The committee also endorsed continuing the town’s free ridership program this summer through the BRTA bus system.

In 2012, the program was described as a great success by BRTA representative Lee Scott Laugenour.

In the year, usage in the town was up 35 percent, which was made even more impressive by the fact that, system-wide, the ridership stayed the same.

“I said last year that I was hoping to get to 15,000 rides, and I am very happy to report we got to 19,000,” said Mr. Laugenour.

The free rides are on Fridays and Saturdays from Earth Day to Columbus Day.
