Book lovers brave snow for a good cause

[/media-credit]PITTSFIELD – A three-day book sale held last weekend, despite an end-of-winter snowstorm, raised a total of $10,115.
Nancy McNabb, Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum book sale chair, sent out a memo thanking a small army of volunteers for making the sale a success.
The storm that dumped several inches of snow and created sketchy road conditions actually turned out to be a good thing for the sale.
Dozens of people came out in inclement weather on Friday to attend the second day of the sale.
Mrs. McNabb said attendance was heavy at Thursday’s opening night which is for Friends members only. The storm was just getting started late Thursday afternoon.
On Friday morning, braving snowy roads and heavy snow accumulation, a steady stream of resolute book-lovers poured into the library’s basement auditorium.
They perused hundreds of books, CDs, DVDs, pamphlets and so on.

[/media-credit]In the adjoining smaller basement room, people bumped elbows with each other as they looked for books in numerous categories. Some of them included art, cooking, crafts, photography, self-help and science fiction.
On Saturday, the third and final day of the sale, book sales totaled $3,371.75, Mrs. McNabb said.
“Thank you so much to everyone who made this sale possible. I’m so pleased,” she wrote in the memo that went out on Sunday to volunteers who helped with the sale.
Volunteers are always needed and welcome at the book sales which are held three times a year.
