NBT offers financial tips to students

LENOX – More than 70 seniors from Lenox Memorial Middle and High School learned all about financial literacy, budgeting and credit management from NBT Bank at the school’s annual senior retreat.

“Seniors need to understand how to make informed and thoughtful decisions about finances, especially as they prepare to take on the cost of college and step into financial independence,” said John Bortolotto, branch manager of NBT Bank of Lenox.

“We help students develop strong financial habits, prepare for financial adulthood, and pay more attention to how money is wisely saved and spent as they enter college and future careers,” he added.

NBT Bank, one of the high school’s local business partners, educated graduating seniors on the fundamentals of understanding, establishing and managing credit.

The seniors also learned about how to protect themselves when using online banking and other financial products and services.

“Our seniors need to start creating their good credit scores now,” said Dr. Edward Costa II, superintendent of Lenox Public Schools. “Having a good credit score enables them to get the best rates for all kinds of loans- so early attention now pays off later.”

NBT Bank’s financial education program, Strive®, provides in-classroom and online financial education to help today’s youth grow their money skills.

The bank hopes the program can be a source for learning and inspiration to help kids, teens and young adults establish a positive relationship with money and navigate personal finance as their financial needs mature.
