Simple hearts

Rain, rain, stay, stay, make this dang white crap go away! All done, thank you, and with a bright and cheery weekend behind us we were left with a mere taste of what is soon to be: Mother Nature’s striptease act.

Spring! The ideal name for the season, too, don’t ya think? Naturally, when it comes, it makes us want to spring out of our homes outside into the cool air with the sunroof open and the windows rolled down as we start to peel off layers one by one; woo-woo! The sun is gleaming and the smell of fresh air floats by our noses.

For me it was back and forth to play dates, just one of the pros of living out in the country and while my sweet  flowers designed a city of giant snow balls, the girls and I clinked polka-dotted martini glasses filled with our Sunday drink of choice – the mimosa.

As I short-cutted my way to “free to be me” destination, happily cruising in front of me was a distinguished looking man in his Audi convertible with the top down loving life. Well he wasn’t wasting any time now was he?

Wasting time? What’s that? Well, there are many definitions for it. It can be pertaining to doing something frivolous with no real goal or means for reward; it can be staying in a dead end job knowing full well there is not much in the line of advancement; it can also mean playing games with relationships that will not and never could go anywhere, at least not in a place deserved.

I saw it in a movie once, and it has always stuck with me and use it often for friendly advice: “Be the leading lady in your life story!”

But sometimes there are times when we just can’t help who we fall for.

The heart is very simple, much simpler than the head. Things would be a heck of a lot simpler if once in a while we could just rip our hearts out of our chest. Just wait, I’m really getting somewhere here.

I am speaking of the incredible TV series Once Upon a Time, incredible especially to my fantasy writing friends and me.

In the episode “The Miller’s Daughter,” Cora was once degraded by a king and his princess daughter and made to fall on her knees after she reprimanded the princess for slyly and purposefully tripping her. She vowed to herself at that moment she would one day make them fall to her knees.

She proclaims to the king she can spin straw into gold and they agree if she can do it she can marry the prince, but if she fails, she dies.

While locked in the tower for the night high above steep and jagged cliffs of a cold and roaring sea with no means to escape, Cora knows this claim she has made will be her demise.

It’s now that Rumple (the dark one) comes to her, teaches the magic of spinning straw into gold and they fall in love overnight, as he promises to love and teach her all he knows of magic.

Not only does she learn to spin gold, but she learns other forms of dark magic, the largest tearing one’s heart from their chest, but they only die if the heart is crushed; if it is not, then the heart can be stored away or held and commanded.

Cora surprises Rumple not with the king’s heart, but with her own as he is now her weakness and she will not let anything stand in her way. She knows magic and feels no love.

Just a hypothetical, but what if we could do the same?

Would we be fulfilled in our lives? Gung-ho toward all our selfish, prestigious goals, lacking any kind of morality and never knowing the difference?

A world without love? Unthinkable… and yet, how many times has your heart got in the way?

Ciao Bella
