Nejaime’s gets more approvals

LENOX – The project to refresh the look and add to the space for a local liquor store got yet another stamp of approval.

Nejaime’s Wine Cellar got two more approvals towards its remodel from the Historic District Commission.

The first was to replace the current signs with new designs.

The HDC discussed the size of the new signs and whether or not the signs fit within the guidelines.

The new signs have less area but are larger to their widest points.

“There is no need for them to be any larger than what we have had,” Owner Joseph Nejaime said.

The board granted the new sign with the caveat that the sign must meet approval for its size by the town building inspector.

Mr. Nejaime also requested approval to add a second door directly to the left of the current door that faces the parking lot.

“Currently, only having one door has created a real bottleneck, and this is a simple door, the same as what we have,” he said.

The board agreed the sign would fit well with the look of the downtown and then approved the project.

Late last year, the HDC first approved plans drawn by John Barry of Barry Architects calling for a one-story, 1,880-square foot addition to the east side of the existing building housing Nejaime’s.

Nejaime’s is currently in a long-term lease for the building, which was purchased by Drew Davis in 2011 for $1.7 million.

Mr. Davis, who was in attendance at the HDC meeting, has looked to improve the lot since his purchase, including recent renovations to the other building on the lot, which houses the Lenox Post Office and several other businesses and offices.

Those improvements were a new roof, which was also approved by the HDC last spring, and several other “green” enhancements.
