Lenox lacks candidates

LENOX – As local ballots are beginning to shape up around the county, some towns face the prospect of several open positions without a single candidate.

In Lenox, the Democratic Caucus worked right up until the last minute to find candidates to fill out the party line on this year’s ballot, yet three seats have no candidates.

There are no candidates for a three-year term on the Board of Health, a two-year term on the Planning Board and a School Committee seat with a three year term.

All the other races this year feature candidates running unopposed.

At the top of this year’s ballot, Chairman Kenneth L. Fowler is running unopposed for his seat on the Board of Selectmen.

The other uncontested elected positions include two Board of Assessor posts, with incumbent James Sorrentino and newcomer Wayne Lemanski running; the election for town moderator features only longtime incumbent Hugh Cowhig.

While there are two seats open on the School Committee, there is only one candidate, incumbent Veronica Fenton.

Diana Kirby is on the ballot for a five-year seat on the Lenox Housing Authority and Gary Schiff is seeking another five-year Planning Board position.

There are no other candidates for the seats from the Republican Party and those seats will need to be filled by write-in candidates.

The lack of candidates comes only one year after the town featured a number of contested races. The town election had a five-way race for two Select Board seats. Those seats were won by Edward Lane and Channing Gibson.

The election also featured four candidates for three School Committee spots, won by Jo Anne H. Magee, Jennifer S. Reinholt and Frances E. Sorrentino.

There was even a contested race for the Planning Board position won by Kathleen McNulty-Vaughan.
