CBRSD approves FY ’14 capital projects

DALTON – Eight capital projects for the Central Berkshire Regional School District are moving forward to town meetings, a total of $615,783.

The projects are:
Becket-Washington School playground equipment, $20,000
Craneville Elementary School hallway carpet replacement, $117,000
two Craneville air handling units, $92,000
Wahconah Regional High School walkway replacement, $110,000
Wahconah auditorium seating refurbishment, $100,000
CBRSD Central Office HVAC system, $50,000
two district-wide vehicles, $54,783
district-wide security improvements, $72,000

The projected town contributions:
Becket, $33,757
Cummington, $20,527
Dalton, $419,764
Hinsdale, $58,022
Peru, $24,773
Washington, $21,920
Windsor, $37,019

Some school committee members expressed concern over the number and cost of the projects, doubting they would pass at the necessary town meetings.

“We’re looking at a total of $615,000 to these communities,” said School Committee Member John F. Conner. “We need to have a different way to do this, maybe one or two [capital projects] a year – something to cut down on the money we’re asking from the towns. We really have to be sensitive.”

However, most members still saw the need for making the proposed changes.

“Let’s give the towns the opportunities to vote for these,” said School Committee Michael J. Hopper.

Mr. Hopper went on to say if the towns don’t approve certain projects, such as the Craneville carpet replacements, the district will need to find a way to take care of them.

“We’re going to have to do something,” he said. “We have to start planning for other ways.”
